Wait-February 3, 2025

Wait! Small word with big implications.

Monday Morning Devotion -February 3, 2025

Wait

“Wait broke the wagon down!”  That’s what Mom used to tell me when I was a kid and she wanted me to do something. And I, as kids who are always focused on playing, would say

“Can we just wait awhile?”  In those situations, waiting was not a good thing.

But waiting can be good.  Let me share how and when waiting is valuable. .For this pertinent  information let me share with you a devotion I just read by Sarah Young.  Sarah is a mega-best-selling author of Jesus books.  Her first book “Jesus Calling” has sold zillions and is still popular.  The lesson on waiting that I want to share with you today was her second book, published by Thomas Nelson in 2012.

This book was written during a very difficult time in her life when she had to do some difficult but important waiting.  She uses scripture and writes each devotion as if Jesus is specifically talking to you, the reader.  So, here’s the 18th devotion in the book “Jesus Today.”

“For I know the plans that I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans for welfare and not for calamity to give you a future and hope.”  Jeremiah 29:11 NASB

Jesus says:  “Keep.  Your eyes on Me!  I am with you, taking care of you in the best possible way. When you are suffering, My care may seem imperfect and inadequate.  You seek relief and I make you wait. Just remember: There are many different ways to wait, and some are much better than others.  Beneficial waiting involves looking to Me continually---trusting and loving Me.

“Thank me for this time of neediness, when you must depend on Me more than usual.  Do not waste this opportunity by wishing it away. Trust that I know what I’m doing---that I can bring good out of everything you encounter, everything you endure.  Don’t let your past or present suffering contaminate your view of the future.  I am the Lord of your future, and I have good things in store for you.  I alone know the things I am planning for you---to give you a future and a hope.”

Other verses of scripture that support this devotion on the importance of waiting, especially during tough times are:

The Lord is good to those who wait for Him, to the soul who seeks Him.  Lamentations 3:25 NKJV

But those who wait on the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles, they shall run and not be weary they shall walk and not faint.  Isaiah 40:31 NKJV.

We know that in all things God works for the good of those who love Him, who have been called according to His purpose.  Romans 8:28

When I was in the United State Army it seemed that their motto was “hurry up and wait.”

Every place and in almost every situation when the whole platoon went somewhere we marched to the destination and when we got there we had to wait for varying amounts of time.  Even when we went to lunch we had to wait to get in to the mess hall.  I mean, “Hey Guys, you know what time we eat, why do we have to wait?”

I’m probably being too harsh in that situation because they did feed a lot of soldiers and waiting to get to eat was much better than being on KP duty.  There was not a single job on KP that wasn’t laborious and not much fun.

So, waiting in life has it purposes.  And as we read in this devotion waiting is important and is a positive thing.  Yes, it is difficult at times, but it’s necessary even though we can’t always understand why we have to wait.

But, it’s important to understand that God has purpose and is present in all things.

No prayer goes unheard or unanswered even though the answer might be a “not now”  or “be patient.”  We do know this.  God is in control, no matter how difficult or disastrous the situation may seem.

So, with apologies to Mom “wait did not break the wagon down” but weight did.

Prayer:  Lord Jesus, help us to always be mindful, even in stressful, times that you are in control and are calling us to wait for an answer. For we know that ultimately the plans you have for us are good ones.   Amen!
